Surveys say Florida roads dangerous as Jacksonville road work set

Florida is making some lists again in 2021, and not in a good way.

Despite less traffic due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a nationwide survey by an auto insurance guide and a separate report by an alliance of consumer, medical, public health, law enforcement and insurance companies say the Sunshine State hasn’t been a safe place to drive.

First,’s latest “10 States with the Most Fatal Car Accidents” ranks Florida as No. 9. Its report at says Florida had 13.97 fatal crashes per 100,000 residents from 2016 to 2018. That averages out to 1.34 fatal accidents annually per 100 million miles traveled.

The survey used data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Federal Highway Administration and U.S. Census Bureau. Its analysis found 80 percent of the top 10 states were all in the Southeast, Mississippi being the worst for fatal car crashes with 20.44 per 100,000 residents. Georgia ranked 13th.
