Heart disease is one of the biggest killers on the planet. With the growing pace in our lives and all those hectic schedules, all we are interested is in filling our tummies with ‘something’, rather than something healthy.

So if you don’t start getting serious about the food you take, God forbid, but one fine day even you might end up as a victim of heart attack.
So what are the foods that can save you from such a situation? Read and find out!

1. Pomegranate

Pomegranates can prevent the accumulation of plaque inside the arteries. The fruit can also stimulate the production of nitric oxide within our blood. Nitric oxide opens the arteries and lowers blood pressure.

2. Chia Seeds

Chia seeds have been in use since the ancient times. This is primarily because the seeds are excellent sources of hydration and energy. Chia seeds majorly constitute of fibre and alpha-linoleic acid. These two elements help regulate the blood pressure and cholesterol levels and lower the triglycerides.

3. Tomatoes

Guess what gives tomatoes their red colour? It is an antioxidant named carotenoid lycopene. When you increase lycopene intake, it results in a reduction in the oxidation of bad cholesterol. This ultimately paves the way for the prevention of atherosclerosis.

4. Garlic

Garlic is one of the best foods for heart. Though it doesn’t possess a commendable taste, the benefits it has for your heart make it a must-have dish. Garlic not only plays a vital role in protecting your cardiovascular health, but it also aids in the treatment of infections and even cancer.

Studies have shown that daily consumption of 4,000 mcg of allicin (allicin is a compound in garlic), which is contained in about 2-4 garlic cloves can lower your cholesterol. It can also prevent the formation of clots and can decrease the diastolic and systolic blood pressure.

5. Cinnamon

Cinnamon is an excellent food that can help maintain heart health at optimum levels. Just a tablespoon of cinnamon a day can bring down cholesterol levels and will also give you a healthy dose of antioxidants.

6. Turmeric

Curcumin, the primary compound in turmeric, is efficient in protecting the heart. In one research conducted in France, a number of mice were divided into two groups. One group was fed with a curcumin-based diet while the other was given a diet not supplemented with curcumin. 16 weeks later, the mice that were given a curcumin-based diet had a 26 percent reduction in the fatty deposits inside their arteries. On the other hand, the mice that we given a diet not supplemented with curcumin didn’t show any reduction. Now, isn’t that a reason enough to make you add this colour dish to your diet?

7. Apples

It is said that an apple a day can keep the doctor away. Quite true that is. And in this case, an apple a day can keep heart disease at bay. Apples contain a compound called pectin, which is instrumental lowering cholesterol and prevent arteries from getting clogged.

A study conducted by researchers from the Ohio State University revealed that an apple a day lowers the levels of a blood chemical which is linked to the hardening of arteries. Again, one very good reason to include another super food in your diet!

8. Greens

Greens were being recommended by our mothers since we were kids. Undoubtedly these are the best sources of antioxidants. Oxidization of cholesterol can lead to the deposit of plaque inside the arteries and greens can help stop that. Other major constituents of greens that help prevent heart disease are fibre, folate and potassium.

Regular consumption of greens rich in folate can lower the levels of homocysteine. Homocysteine is an amino acid present in the blood, and its excessive amounts can lead to coronary heart disease.

Trust me. Eat these foods regularly and don’t ever again fear heart disease!
