The Federal Government and the NCC had directed all Nigerians to ensure their phone numbers are linked to their National Identity Number (NIN). The penalty for failure to do this before January 19, 2021, and February 9, 2021, will be blocking all Sim cards not linked to NIN.
The January 19, 2021 deadline is for those who enrolled for NIN but have not yet linked phone numbers to their NIN while February 9, 2021, is for those who do not have NIN and need to enroll for NIN.
The latest update from National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) concerning those that have enrolled for NIN and BVN is that this category of subscribers need not bother about linking their phone numbers to NIN. This is because the NIMC is currently linking their data with BVN.
This implies that subscribers who enrolled for BVN and NIN need not bother with linking phone numbers to NIN again. As explained by the spokesperson for NIMC, Kayode Adegoke, “those who enrolled for both BVN and NIN should only dial *346# to confirm their phone numbers are linked to their NIN”. The NIMC Spokesperson further emphasized that the ongoing NIN linking with BVN data does not apply to those who have not enrolled for NIN before.
However, it should be noted that the above code only works with the phone numbers used for BVN enrollment and NIN registration. Any other phone number not used for BVN and NIN will not work unless the phone numbers are updated in NIMC offices and linked to BVN in the bank.
These efforts are put in place to ensure the exercise does not flout covid-19 protocols and also to ensure a national database for Nigerians is achieved within the shortest time possible.
