Beans are one of the most common staple foods widely consumed by many Sfricans. It is a highly versatile food that is highly packed with nutrients and it represents the major dietary protein source of many Nigerians. But for some reasons, beans are preserved with chemicals, these Beans preserved with chemicals are very harmful to human health.

Among the harmful chemicals used in preserving the beans samples analysed by Daily Trust are; Permethrin, Malathion, a-Endosulfan, b-Endosulfan, Aldrin, Dieldrin, Lindane, and Heptachlor.

The common beans in Nigeria are majorly two i.e the brown-coloured beans and the white-coloured variety. Due to the versatility of beans, they are often employed by many Nigerians in the preparation of many local foods such as moi-moi, ekuru, akara, gbegiri, and others.

Apart from these, in Nigeria, beans are also eaten as cooked beans, with such cooked beans often made in form of beans porridge or simply cooked and then eaten accompanied by a coarse pepper stew that is often specially made for it. In all these, it is obvious that beans are a popular food among Nigerians and those who do not like eating the cooked beans, often get their needs met from other varieties such as akara and moi-moi, and while its price has considerably gone up in recent years, beans still represent a great source of dietary protein to Nigerians.

However, due to the need of many food farmers to cut the costs and losses that often accompany the infestation of their produce by pests and diseases, many farmers and producers often employ the use of certain chemicals to keep such pests at bay. These chemicals are often effective in reducing the damage done to the food crops such as beans, however, such chemicals often pose great risks to many of the consumers of such foods. Unfortunately, beans are not exempted from this practice and when precautions are not taken, the repercussions could be grave.

This, therefore, calls for devising a means through which we can ascertain whether our raw beans are preserved with these harmful chemicals or not. This article aims to reveal four (3) easy steps of determining how safe your raw beans are before you cook them.

1. Pour the raw beans into the bowl or bucket of water

2. Stir it for about 20 seconds

Do this to check for oily films on the water. If you could see traces of oily films on the water, then chemicals may have been used to preserve the beans.

3. Check to see if you could 2-3 beans weevils on the water.

Beans weevil, most often than not would not be able to survive when beans are sprayed with chemicals. Their presence might indicate naturally preserved beans.
